In the 1980s, planting levels were approximately 20 million trees each year in southern Ontario. That number declined in the 1990s, primarily because of government cutbacks, to about 2 million trees per year. Our objective is to help our tree planting partners move that number back up to the levels required. Trees Ontario works with various partners from across the province, and is supported by generous donations from the government and others. |

The goal of the program is to sequester carbon; enhance and diversify southern Ontario’s landscape; increase adaptive capacity to withstand climate change; moderate local climate by providing shade, moderating temperature extremes and reducing the effects of storms; increase wildlife habitat; increase soil and water conservation, and provide local economic opportunities.
Trees Ontario has established a seed forecasting database to monitor and better track seed availability for future planting use. Compiling information about seed availability, location, type and quantity enables Trees Ontario and its partners to collect and store seed and helps ensure that the appropriate stock is available to meet long term demands.
Trees Ontario’s, Ontario Heritage Tree Program identifies and records the location of heritage trees in the province. Heritage trees are identified and assessed based on their age, size, appearance, and most importantly their cultural and historical significance. The identification of these trees will enable Trees Ontario and community minded organizations to locate potential native seed sources of legacy trees. Collecting these seeds will ensure native stock is grown and available for future planting.
