In an effort to meet the first phase of the Green Plan to reduce energy consumption by 20% there are several programs with a focus on energy efficiency. The Appliance Replacement Program, the Building Renewal Program and the Compact Flourescent Light Bulb Program are amongst the largest of their kind in North America. Participation is key to all Green Works programs and educational materials play an important role.
A key strategy in Toronto Community Housing’s Green Plan is to significantly raise recycling rates throughout its communities through waste reduction and diversion. The “My Community Recycles” Program, the New Enclosures Program and the Review of Recycling Processes in all Multi-Residential Communities focus on education and training and provide materials to facilitate recycling programs to tenants and staff.
In order to achieve the goal to reduce water consumption by 20%, Toronto Community Housing is replacing old, inefficient toilets with low flow ones through the Water Conservation Initiative. Replacements are six-litre ultra low flush toilets to achieve cost savings despite the rising annual water rate
Education and training play an important role in Toronto Community Housing’s Green Plan in raising the awareness of staff and tenants on issues of global warming, energy efficiency and simple ways to save on energy. These programs, including the Green Works Engagement Program, the Weatherization Training Program and Brahms B.E.S.T., use participation to engage and educate Toronto Community Housing staff and tenants.
In order to improve our green spaces, we are facilitating the growth of community gardens within Toronto Community Housing through a community garden manual. Within Toronto Community Housing there are more than 100 community gardens providing many benefits to the community and the environment.
