Climate Change Education for Schools and Families

More info: http://www.koc.on.ca/SchoolPrograms/ClimateChangePrograms.aspx

The Kinark Outdoor Centre has developed an interactive program for Grade 5 students that generates a fundamental awareness of greenhouse gases, and an exposure to a set of practical actions that they can take everyday. Families can also participate through our Climate Change Neighbourhood Programs that provide a fun environment for families to learn together about how to reduce their carbon footprint and save money! Developed using principles of experiential education, this integrated program focuses on meeting expectations for the Science and Technology curriculum. The program is run from Kinark’s sustainable facilities that utilize solar power and straw bail insulation, providing an opportunity to explore these, and other, alternatives. Participants will engage in a variety of motivating and active hands-on activities that present the issue of climate change and what they and their families can do about it in a tangible way using the top ten ways to “Take Action” by We Conserve (www.weconserve.ca). For schools, the program can run as a stand-alone day trip, or add it as one activity period during your multi-day visit to KOC. Students, teachers, and parents can continue to learn with our interactive, on-line, solar panel demonstrations. By visit our website back in the classroom or at home, they can watch us save energy, feed energy back to the grid, and expand their understanding. If you wish to receive further information on the program and/or discuss options for your class or neighbourhood group, please contact the Kinark Outdoor Centre at 1-800-805-8252 or carmen.hanak@kinark.on.ca
